Dr Girish Chandra (Founder & President of B.N. Prasad Memorial Charitable Eye Hospital)

Dr Girish Chandra has several years of experience in the field of eye surgery and medicines. Born in Balrampur and having practised across the world, he currently resides in London and visits India frequently to manage the eye hospital. Dr Chandra had completed his high school from Barabanki near Lucknow and then had completed his BSc from Lucknow University. He had then obtained MBBS in 1961, DOMS, Master of Surgery (Ophthalmology) from King George Medical College Lucknow and diploma in Ophthalmology London. Dr Chandra was awarded FRC in Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists London and then Diploma in Ophthalmic Refractive Surgery in 1995.

Dr Girish Chandra has rich experience in clinical ophthalmic practise. After completing his internship in medicine and surgery in 1961 & other ophthalmic qualifications from King George Medical College Lucknow thereafter became was a lecturer in Ophthalmology. Subsequently he has worked at Mcgill University (Montreal, Canada) as an associate professor at Vermont, USA with the University of Vermont Medical School. While working in Saudi Arabia, he introduced intraocular lens (IOL) implant and Refractive eye surgery in early 1985. During this period he mostly developed care, cure, control and preventive measures for blinding eye diseases. He is founder member of IAPB (International Agency for prevention of blindness foundation) formerly moving to the UK where he continued his clinical activities, and curable work. He applies his efforts towards preventive curable care around the world, mostly remote areas.

Dr Aman Chandra – Vice President

Aman Chandra is a consultant ophthalmologist in the UK with a specialist interest in cataract surgery, retinal diseases and vitreoretinal surgery. He undertook ophthalmic training at leading institutions in London including, Moorfields Eye Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital and The National hospital for neurological diseases. He completed two surgical retinal fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital (London) and The Royal Victoria Eye; Ear Hospital in Melbourne(Australia).

During his training, he led research investigating the genetics of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments and ectopia lentis. He co-discovered the first genetic association of the former and has provided the definitive genetic analysis for the latter. For this work, he was awarded a PhD from University College London, and the Syme Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd).

Aman has received further awards from Moorfields Eye Hospital, the Royal College of Ophthalmologist and the RCSEd. He has authored over 40 peer reviewed publications and two book chapters.He has undertaken charitable work in Sierra Leone and Sri Lanka. He has a passion to improve care to the under privileged in the world, in particular to those in the area of Balarampur. He plans to develop this through the Mission For Vision charity. With charitable ophthalmic care, he aims to improve the lives of many peoplealong with their families.

Dr Birbala – Director

Dr Birbala Chandra has extensive experience in obstetrics and gynaecology in many countries including India, Ireland, UK, USA and Saudi Arabia. Having worked in different countries, key areas like maternity and child welfare have become very close to her heart. She has plans to develop a centre in remote areas of Balrampur with the aim to prevent maternal and child mortality.Women’s health is of prime importance to maintain the health of their newborn babies for the development of the nation.

Birbala is deeply involved in the formation and the development of Balrampur Hospital Foundation including its progress. Since 2006, She has also organised several fundraising events in the UK. Birbala has also actively participated in many charitable eye camps in Balrampur for many years. Recently, she has been involved in the launch of the Mission 4 Vision project to take care and prevent eye ailments.

Dr Anjali Chandra – Director

Anjali is a general medical practitioner and has been working as a doctor for more than five years now. She is a qualified specialist from the Imperial College in London. She is based near Portsmouth on the South Coast of England. Anjali has worked in East London, Colchester, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth. She has worked as a junior doctor in various specialties: emergency medicine, ear, nose & throat surgery, paediatrics, psychiatry, and respiratory medicine. Nowadays, she works near Portsmouth at Park Lane Medical Centre as a general practitioner which she really enjoys. Anjali is also actively involved in making Balrampur Hospital Foundation a grand success.

Ms Renu Chandra – Director Finance

Renu Chandra is an active member and the Director of the foundation.She helped and developed care of elderly far more then 20 years and later she has been exclusively involved in the process of the charity work particularly in the remote and under developed areas of the Northern region of UP. Looking forward, she aims to promote further advancement in the development of the Mission 4 Vision project as well as the other health care initiatives for women’s health. Renu has been associated with the charity work for many years now.

Dr Rakesh Srivastava – Director

Dr. Rakesh Kumar is currently the V.P. of Technology for Specialty Coating Systems, Inc., where he leads the R&D group and manages Parylene R&D activities worldwide. He has more than 30 years of extensive experience in polymeric materials and their applications in the medical, electronics and semiconductors areas. He is currently involved with the application of materials in the field of medical devices, electronics, MEMS, sensors, and nanotechnology.  Dr. Kumar earned his doctoral degree in Organic Chemistry from India and completed his post-doctorate work in Polymer Chemistry at the UCL, U.K. He is the co-author of a book and has authored several published papers and patents. His personal interests include community service, cultural activities, volunteer work, golf, and photography.

Viv Hoyle – Director

Viv Hoyle was born in Cornwall in 1944. He was educated at Portsmouth Northern Grammar, Welbeck College, the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (from where he was commissioned into the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) and the Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham, near Swindon, from where he obtained at Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from London University.
Viv had numerous adventures in the Regular and Territorial Army for 20 years, including being posted to Cyprus, Libya, Germany and Northern Ireland, from where he was acting as a Military Intelligence Officer in Londonderry. Additionally, he was stationed at Westland Helicopters near Yeovil as aircrew for testing Army prototype helicopters.
Viv joined IBM and then subsequently Zurich Insurance Company for another 24 years as an engineer and Manager of their large company car fleets.
He has been married to Jayne for 47 year and has two children Sarah and Simon and two grandsons.
Viv’s hobbies and interests range widely from writing books to travelling.

Dr Archana Srivastava – Secretary

Dr Archana Srivastava is a Geographical Information (GIS) and Remote Sensing professional with more than fourteen years’ experience in environmental impact assessment, watershed management, and site suitability analyses projects in Alberta, Canada. Currently, she is actively involved in the Balrampur Hospital to take it to the next level, closely working with the President and other members of the organization.
Her past work experience is with one of the multi-national companies in North America has sharpened her skills in management, attention to details, and leadership qualities. At present, she is working on groundwater and soil parameters variabilities on streamflow predictions for Elbow River watershed, Alberta. She worked on the projects like Flood Hazard Assessment and Modelling, TransCanada oil and gas pipeline, power transmission line, watershed elineation and wetland water act reports. Other significant work includes a GIS model to map proposed project disturbance for the Improvements to Highway 63 near Fort McMurray; creating a photo-based map (aerial photograph) for the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing; a qualitative assessment of natural hazards using remote sensing, and mapping of forests under threat in the Revelstoke area. She has a professional certification from GISCI, USA. She received scholarships to visit the UK, and Russia for her doctoral work. She has done Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University and Masters in GIS from the University of Calgary. She was the recipient of the Alberta Merit scholarship for her performance. She presented papers and seminars.

Ms Gemma Heath – Active Member and Organiser of Charitable Fundraising Events

Gemma is a Finance Assistant, working for a packaging design and rebranding agency in London. At the moment, she studies in her spare time to qualify for her AAT. Nothing more can make her happy than to volunteer for charities. She is already associated with a charity called ‘Contact the Elderly Once a Month’ where her role involves driving elderly people to local tea parties and chatting with them for a couple of hours while enjoying tea and cake. She is also interested in photography, though she can’t get much time for it however it still remains her passion.
